This past week, Sarah Colosimo joined a team of biologists and wildlife veterinarians from the Oregon and Washington Departments of Fish and Wildlife to capture and tag male California sea lions using Astoria, Oregon's mooring basin as a haul out. I was lucky enough to visit and participate on Tuesday, the 1st of September, at which time I took the video below of a release. The whole capture and tagging process has been honed over the years and is a marvel to behold.
Sarah is equipping sea lions captured as part of this long-running program with GPS transmitters that, for her Masters research, will provide vital information about how they use the Puget Sound and surrounding waters, interact with salmon, and respond to this year's massive El Niño event. Here, Sarah and I are pictured deploying a GPS transmitter on one of the captured sea lions.

Special thanks to Sarah for inviting me to participate, WDFW's Casey Clark for hosting my visit (and taking the photo), and to the whole team for making me feel so welcome.
